Trying to figure it out

March 24, 2009

I Guess That’s Why They Call It the Blues
Lyrics:

Don’t wish it away
Don’t look at it like it’s forever
Between you and me I could honestly say
That things can only get better
And while I’m away
Dust out the demons inside
And it won’t be long before you and me run
To the place in our hearts where we hide
And I guess that’s why they call it the blues
Time on my hands could be time spent with you
Laughing like children, living like lovers
Rolling like thunder under the covers
And I guess that’s why they call it the blues
Just stare into space
Picture my face in your hands
Live for each second without hesitation
And never forget I’m your man
Wait on me girl
Cry in the night if it helps
But more than ever I simply love you
More than I love life itself

Still Dreaming

March 21, 2009

So, you’re back in Berlin and I’m trying everything I can. I got up early and started doing things, I cleaned a little, I went out for coffee. I am going to go work out now.

But I can’t stop thinking about you. I want to text you but I won’t. You are in another place and another moment and I want you to be there. It’s ok. It’s just that everything in my heart is touched by you and misses you.

So here is a song. I don’t know if you will check this website at all, but here it is. I need to get it off my chest.

The first time I heard Leonard Cohen’s “Hey That’s No Way to Say Goodbye” sung by Roberta Flack, I thought it was too flat, too boring. But the words caught me and now the tune moves me as well. It’s so simple but it captures the right feeling, and it stays with me. Listen a few times.

Hey, That’s No Way to Say Goodbye

Lyrics:
I loved you in the morning, our kisses deep and warm,
your hair upon the pillow like a sleepy golden storm,
Many loved before us, I know we are not new,
In city and in forest, they loved like me and you,
Now it’s come to distances, both of us must try,
Your eyes fill with sorrow,
Hey, that’s no way to say goodbye.

I’m not looking for another as I wander in my time,
Walk me to the corner, our steps will always rhyme
You know my love goes with you. Your love stays with me,
It’s just the way it changes, like the shoreline of the sea,
Let’s not talk of love or change, things we can’t untie,
Your eyes fill with sorrow,
Hey, that’s no way to say goodbye.

I loved you in the morning, our kisses deep and warm,
And your hair upon the pillow like a sleepy golden storm,
Many loved before us, I know we are not new,
And in city and in forest, they loved like me and you,
But now’s it’s come to distances, both of us must try,
Your eyes fill with sorrow,
Hey, that’s no way to say goodbye.

I’m not looking for another as I wander in my time,
Walk me to the corner, our steps will always rhyme
You know my heart goes with you. Your love stays with me,
It’s just the way it changes, like the shoreline of the sea,
But let’s not talk of love or change, things we can’t untie,
Your eyes fill with sorrow,
Hey, that’s no way to say goodbye.

Tell me a story

February 18, 2009

I’m not sure what to say about this song.

Maybe because I think there is something very “me” about this song, and so I want to give it to you and I don’t want to explain.

The Book of Love

Lyrics:
The book of love is long and boring
No one can lift the damn thing
It’s full of charts and facts and figures
And instructions for dancing, but

I…
I love it when you read to me and
You…
You can read me anything

The book of love has music in it
In fact that’s where music comes from
Some of it is just transcendental
Some of it is just really dumb, but

I…
I love it when you sing to me and
You…
You can sing me anything

The book of love is long and boring
And written very long ago
It’s full of flowers and heart-shaped boxes
And things we’re all too young to know, but

I…
I love it when you give me things and
You…
You ought to give me wedding rings
I…
I love it when you give me things and
You…
You ought to give me wedding rings

The milk with the MOST fat

February 16, 2009

I want to move the bed, and destroy the jungle. I want to get home faster, and take more study breaks. I want to “Love you madly” by Cake!

Love You Madly

Lyrics:

I don’t want to wonder
If this is a blunder
I don’t want to worry whether
We’re gonna stay together
‘Till we die

I don’t want to jump in
Unless this music’s thumping
All the dishes rattle in the cupboards
When the elephants arrive

I want to love you madly
I want to love you now
I want to love you madly, way
I want to love you, love you
Love you madly

I don’t want to fake it
I just want to make it
The ornaments look pretty
But they’re pulling down the branches
Of the Tree

I don’t want to think about it
I don’t want to talk about it
When I kiss your lips
I want to sink down to the bottom
Of the sea

I want to love you madly
I want to love you now, yeah
I want to love you madly, way
I want to love you, love you
Love you madly

I don’t want to hold back
I don’t want to slip down
I don’t want to think back to the one thing that I know
I should have done

I don’t want to doubt you
Know everything about you
I don’t want to sit across the table from you
Wishing I could run

I want to love you madly
I want to love you now
I want to love you madly, way
I want to love you, love you
Love you madly

Keeping the balloon in the air

February 15, 2009

Ben Gibbard sings on Postal Service’s “Such Great Heights” and there’s something about the nerdy thinness of his voice that works with the pulsing electronic background to somehow feel…warm. And the way the lines overlap makes it impossible to sing, but somehow eager– like he just can’t wait to get the words out.

I picked this one because, though we look so different and have such different backgrounds, I really do think we were carved out of the same block, and meant to fit back together. That’s why it feels like coming home, and that’s why no matter how scared I get, I always know you’re the one.

Such Great Heights

Lyrics:
I am thinking it’s a sign that the freckles
In our eyes are mirror images and when
We kiss they’re perfectly aligned
And I have to speculate that God himself
Did make us into corresponding shapes like
Puzzle pieces from the clay
True, it may seem like a stretch, but
Its thoughts like this that catch my troubled
Head when you’re away when I am missing you to death
When you are out there on the road for
Several weeks of shows and when you scan
The radio, I hope this song will guide you home

They will see us waving from such great
Heights, ‘come down now,’ they’ll say
But everything looks perfect from far away,
‘come down now,’ but we’ll stay…

I tried my best to leave this all on your
Machine but the persistent beat it sounded
Thin upon listening
That frankly will not fly. You will hear
The shrillest highs and lowest lows with
The windows down when this is guiding you home

[I actually like this cover too]

Now that I’m 35

February 14, 2009

Well, I’m more worried about 54, but I like the funny old-person way this song sounds, and it makes me think of making faces with you and laughing in bed.

When I’m Sixty Four

Lyrics:

When I get older losing my hair, [not me!]
Many years from now,
Will you still be sending me a valentine
Birthday greetings bottle of wine?

If I’d been out till quarter to three [that's EARLY]
Would you lock the door,
Will you still need me, will you still feed me,
When I’m sixty-four?

oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oooo
You’ll be older too, (ah ah ah ah ah)
And if you say the word,
I could stay with you.

I could be handy mending a fuse
When your lights have gone.
You can knit a sweater by the fireside
Sunday mornings go for a ride.

Doing the garden, digging the weeds,
Who could ask for more?
Will you still need me, will you still feed me,
When I’m sixty-four?

Every summer we can rent a cottage
In the Isle of Wight, if it’s not too dear
We shall scrimp and save
Grandchildren on your knee
Vera, Chuck, and Dave

Send me a postcard, drop me a line,
Stating point of view.
Indicate precisely what you mean to say
Yours sincerely, Wasting Away.

Give me your answer, fill in a form
Mine for evermore
Will you still need me, will you still feed me,
When I’m sixty-four?

Whoo!

Yes ? :)
No ? :(
Maybe ? ;P

Stick It Out

February 14, 2009

Mushaboom is a small town near Halifax, Canada, and Feist is one of Canada’s musical darlings. She’s part of Toronto’s Broken Social Scene collective and has started to be huge internationally. “Mushaboom” was the first single off of her 2004 “Let It Die” album, and the song captures that perfect moment, when being young and poor doesn’t matter. All that matters is that you’re in love and you can imagine the rest of your lives together. It’s about letting your dreams get ahead of yourself and imagining the future. It’s about making it day by day. It’s about hope and eagerness to share a life. It’s about the everyday things that make everything worth it. It’s about us.

Mushaboom

Lyrics:

Helping the kids out of their coats
But wait the babies haven’t been born oh
Unpacking the bags and setting up
And planting lilacs and buttercups oh

But in the meantime we’ve got it hard
Second floor living without a yard
It may be years until the day
My dreams will match up with my pay

Old dirt road,
(mushaboom, mushaboom)
knee deep snow
(mushaboom, mushaboom)
Watching the fire as we grow
(mushaboom, mushaboom)
o-o-o-o-old

I got a man to stick it out
And make a home from a rented house oh
And we’ll collect the moments one by one
I guess that’s how the future’s done oh

How many acres, how much light
Tucked in the woods and out of sight
Talk to the neighbors and tip my cap
On a little road barely on the map

Old dirt road,
mushaboom, mushaboom)
knee deep snow
mushaboom, mushaboom)
Watching the fire as we grow,
mushaboom, mushaboom)
o-o-o-o-old
(mushaboom, mushaboom)
Old dirt road rambling rose
(mushaboom, mushaboom)
Watching the fire as we grow
(mushaboom, mushaboom)
Well I’m Sold…

What’s Up Your Sleeve?

February 13, 2009

This is “You Can Do Magic” by America, which was actually a half-English/half-American band. It came out in 1982 but has much more of a 70s Crosby, Stills, and Nash feel to me (compare this kind of Magic!). It also reminds me of Chinese fox spirits, but that’s probably not something that makes any sense to you!

I’m not sure what to say about the song, except I didn’t believe, and now I do. It’s that simple!

You Can Do Magic

Lyrics:
I never believed in things that I couldn’t see
I said if I can’t feel it then how can it be
No, no magic could happen to me
And then I saw you

I couldn’t believe it, you took my heart
I couldn’t retrieve it, said to myself
What’s it all about
Now I know there can be no doubt

You can do magic
You can have anything that you desire
Magic, and you know
You’re the one who can put out the fire

You know darn well
When you cast your spell you will get your way
When you hypnotize with your eyes
A heart of stone can turn to clay
Doo, doo, doo …

And when the rain is beatin’ upon the window pane
And when the night it gets so cold, when I can’t sleep
Again you come to me
I hold you tight, the rain disappears
Who would believe it
With a word you dry my tears

You can do magic
You can have anything that you desire
Magic, and you know
You’re the one who can put out the fire

You know darn well
When you cast your spell you will get your way
When you hypnotize with your eyes
A heart of stone can turn to clay
Doo, doo, doo …

And If I wanted to
I could never be free
I never believed it was true
But now it’s so clear to me

You can do magic
You can have anything that you desire
Magic, and you know
You’re the one who can put out the fire

You know darn well
When you cast your spell you will get your way
When you hypnotize with your eyes
A heart of stone can turn to clay
Doo, doo, doo …

You’re the one who can put out the fire
You’re the one who can put out the fire
You’re the one who can put out the fire …

Any questions?

February 11, 2009

What a crazy day! I’m too tired to think and still soaking in the possibilities for the next two years. So I think I’ll let the title of Morphine’s “I’m Yours You’re Mine” do the talking…

I’m Yours You’re Mine

Lyrics:
On my fingertips. On the tip of my tongue.
I register your every touch. I hear your smell.
I hear your smile. Fast as light. Two hundred miles.

And all across that line. Stretched between your bed and mine.
All alone just for tonight. I’m yours and you’re mine.

I got birds that shiver in a forest so thick. I got hands full of magic tricks.
And I’ll part those branches with my hands.
Clear the land mines from your path.

And all across that line. Stretched between your bed and mine.
All alone just for tonight. I’m yours and you’re mine.

And all across that line. Stretched between your bed and mine.
All alone just for tonight. I’m yours and you’re mine.

On my fingertips on the tip of my tongue. I register your every touch.
I’ll row the boat across the lake. We got smoke, we got perfume in our wake.

And all across that line. Stretched between your bed and mine.
All alone just for tonight. I’m yours and you’re mine.
